This DVD gives you a very solid instruction in a basic Tai Chi form. The form is shown step-by step from front angle and back angle.
To do this form you need an area of about 4×2 meters or 13×7 feet.
Just to clarify, the DVD does not teach you six Tai Chi forms, but one single form. In Tai Chi and Qigong even shorter sequences of movements are termed forms. So this dvd teaches you six “mini-forms” that together make up a longer form [what most martial artists would consider to be a form].
The form is split-up into smaller lessons, each one has warm-ups and wind-down exercises.
You learn the whole form in a very gradual manner, and DR. Lam also shows you some common mistakes that people do and what to avoid.
Each section of the form is first shown at front by Dr.Lam where he explains ALL the movements involved: hands, arms, foot, legs, head etc.
He even tells where you should be looking.
Then a pupil of his shows it from the back, i.e. from the perspective that you will be doing from, lastly it is shown by a class of students, also from your perspective.
There is alot of repetition involved in each section, which some more experienced people might find a bit irritating, but for “true” beginners it is absolutely perfect.
I have used many self-instruction DVD’s before (in KungFu, Qigong, and yoga), so I think my opinion is of some value when I say that this is differently a DVD that can be used for home-learners and people who have no experience in Tai Chi or Martial Arts.
By the way, the Tai Chi form that Dr. Lam teaches in this DVD is a form aimed at improving your health and not for martial art purposes, although I think it is pointless to distinguish between them…it’s all connected.
The DVD ends with a Qigong exercise, similar to the “holding-a-big-ball”- posture but with movement involved.
On a personal note:
I lived in Brisbane, Australia, for many years and Dr.Lam used to run his Tai Chi for Arthritis, Osteoporosis and Back Pain programs for free on a public free-to-air TV-channel called Briz31.
This should tell you alot about Dr.Lam’s character, as there are not many martial art instructors who would give free instruction in this way to people who really need help.
